The Old Dixie Drive-In in Johnson City, Tennessee

Isn't this a funky little place? I just ran across this postcard on eBay.

My family used to go here when I was 8 years old or so and eat. The best part is that it was a drive-in so you could pull up to the speaker and order your meal. Like Sonic does now, but this was how they did it in the early Ice Age 60s. Of course, it's no longer there.

We sometimes went inside to eat but my sister, Robin, and I always wanted to eat in the car. And we always ordered a cheeseburger, fries, and a milkshake. The burgers were HUGE! As big as your hand. That was one of the things they were noted for.

Did you have a favorite place to eat when you were young?

Sully's drive-in! Sadly, it is gone now.

Sully's is a cool name for a drive-in, Shirl. These little old drive-ins might make for a neat little short story.

The Dixie is long gone, too.

Great find! I love Johnson City of the past. I found a great antique store in Kingsport than sells old ETSU yearbooks from the 50's and 60's for $9.95 each. I bought one from 1956 the other day and I'll be slowly putting stuff from it on my blogs.

My favorite drive in Detroit was A&W, I loved their root beer!

A hamburger as big as your hand? Oh dear, you guys are so underfed.
A real hamburger, Aussie style, needs three hands to hold it.

No really, I'm exaggerating.

You only need two hands to hold one.

And that's no lie.
